Kino Brasil 2024

Kino Brasil 2024

The Kino Brasil Film Festival will once again screen 7 amazing Brazilian films this year, accompanied by an exceptionally rich program of additional events. You can look forward to lectures, debates, dance and music lessons, parties, and tastings of Brazilian coffee and food.

In addition to Brazilian cinema, this year's Kino Brasil Festival will also focus on the theme of drought and the impact of climate on culture. Drought has a significant effect on Brazilian culture, especially in the northeastern region known as Nordeste. It influences literature, music, religious, and cultural traditions. To make your experience even more authentic and to give you a deeper understanding of Brazil, we are preparing a rich accompanying program, which begins several weeks before the festival itself. You can look forward to lectures, debates, dance and music lessons, parties, and tastings of Brazilian coffee and food. Naturally, the theme of drought has also made its way into film. The cinematic “opening act” will be the Brazilian classic from the 1960s Cinema Novo movement, Barren Lives (Vidas Secas), screening on October 29th at Ponrepo Cinema. The film depicts the nearly unbearable living conditions of a family migrating between villages in search of a better life, captured in stark black-and-white images, which still reflect the harsh reality faced by many families in northeastern Brazil today.

The first extended weekend of November (October 31st - November 3rd) will be dedicated mainly to films and post-screening discussions at Bio Oko. This year, we will present six carefully selected contemporary films – five dramas and one (dramatic) documentary. The film Portrait of a Certain Orient follows the escape of two Christian siblings, Emilie and Emir, from war-torn Lebanon in search of a better future. It's a film about memory, love, passion, and prejudice, revealing the saga of Lebanese immigrants in the Amazon rainforest.

The drama Pureza, based on true events, tells the story of a mother from the impoverished interior of Maranhão state, who, in search of her missing son, becomes a witness to the brutal treatment of enslaved workers. Fans of Brazilian cinema know well that Kleber Mendonça Filho is one of its most prominent representatives, renowned worldwide. Kino Brasil never misses a film by this “Brazilian Tarantino,” a nickname he earned after the immense success of Bacurau (2019).

With his latest film, Ghost Portraits, Kleber ventures into the documentary genre, uncovering the secrets of the streets of his hometown Recife, the capital of Pernambuco state on Brazil's tropical northeastern coast. The clash of two worlds and the exposure of Brazil's corrupt elite in The Seeker is amplified by its unusual cinematographic style, with long, uninterrupted shots where the camera takes on one of the leading roles. The film tells the story of Isabela, the daughter of an influential politician, who grew up in luxury.

BETÂNIA, the protagonist of the eponymous film, leaves her simple rural life and returns to her hometown. Despite the vast and fascinating sand dunes of the Lençois Maranhenses region, polluted water, financial difficulties, and generational conflicts, life always finds a way. Sunday Evening brings a moving story about the famous actress Margot. As she cares for her lifelong love, the renowned writer Antônio, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, she is herself diagnosed with the same devastating illness. We follow her struggle to grasp the remainder of her life, attempt to complete a role that would be the final one of her prestigious career, and reconnect with her estranged children.
