The BEGINNING OF SOMETHING exhibition was born to tell a new story and a new beginning with a new cycle of paintings. There are no real cities or nature in the paintings, but scenarios reminiscent of the purity of digital images, in which everything floats without gravity in an unchanging light, time is cyclical, eternal, without precise historical facts. Both artists paint very realistic compositions with patient precision, drawing on both photography and their own imagination. The "new realisms" of Starosta and Smet are, however, more virtual, representing quiet, prehistoric or futuristic worlds. There are no clear answers to what reality is. Starosta and Smet show possible variations. Marek Starosta (1999) combines spiral and Platonic prisms, in which formless matter transforms into a defined form, becoming a geometric sculpture, a robotic figure or a self-portrait. He likes to paint small everyday stories in a figurative expressionist way; represents imaginary day and night landscapes, perceptions and thoughts, quiet futuristic worlds and their possible variations. Rafael Smet (2000) paints plants, trees and paper origami, cold and disturbing pyramids, but without drama. An almost imperceptible process of metamorphosis and change of nature takes place in the landscape. The oil paintings represent in a realistic style an almost prehistoric and fictitious or ancient world in its decline, where everything is just beginning again.
